One of the most important and challenging activities we go through as a school is hiring a new member of our staff.  This decision can have major implications on our team dynamics and impact the overall learning in our building.  Though, much like teaching itself, this process is as much art as it is science, and each hire presents the opportunity to grow and improve our team or not.  In our combined 20 years of hiring new teachers we have experienced both ends of this spectrum, and we have found there are some key practices that influence our likelihood of making that “home run” hire.

Making a Home Run Hire

Keys to ensuring your best shot at landing an outstanding new team member with your next round of interviews:

  • It starts with recruiting…  Write a great job posting that sells your school and why new talent would want to join your team!
  • Build relationships with local universities, practicum coordinators, student teacher placements. Call them.
  • Sorting through resumes… What traits are you looking for?  Narrow down the field.
  • The interview process sets the tone. A committee of teacher leaders garners input from your staff AND showcases to interviewees the great staff they could work with.   Scenario questions allow you to get real with the candidates.  Have fun with it — get to see their personality and let them see your team’s dynamics.
  • Positive energy, innovative nature, and team attitude can trump experience/skills.  During the interview process remember that skills can be learned, while an innovative mindset and positive attitude can’t.
  • Follow up reference calls

Dr. Michael Methvin is the principal at Pleasant Hope Elementary School in southwest Missouri. He has served as a building principal since 2005 at both the elementary and secondary levels after beginning his career in education as a business teacher. Prior to moving to the Midwest and becoming an educator, he spent time working in marketing, advertising, and the internet industry in Boston and New York.  Currently, Michael enjoys encouraging his team to try new and creative things in their classrooms, hosting the Lead Learner Podcast, and spending time with his family.

Dr. Shane Dublin has been the principal at Bolivar Middle School for the past 10 years. As an educator, he has a passion for being involved in conversations centering around learning, innovation, taking risks and bringing about the best in those around him. He believes the “whatever it takes” philosophy applies to all areas within the academic community and strives to challenge all students, provide interventions for struggling learners and nurture kids toward becoming responsible and productive citizens.
