Seven Essentials When Promoting Your School with Twitter [Podcast #009]

News about schools can generally be put into two categories: bad news and the news we share about ourselves. If we want people to know about all of the great things going on in our school, we have to tell them! And with the advent of the internet and social media, there is no excuse for not being our own best promoter. This week we delve into seven essential steps every lead learner should consider when using Twitter to share school information.

Digital Tool Spotlight

Buffer allows you to be efficient in your social media usage and consolidate the process of posting messages on various social media platforms. The free plan allows you to post to Twitter, Facebook, Google+, and LinkedIn simultaneously. It will also schedule your posts throughout the day or at a specific time of your choosing.  Add a browser extension to use one-click sharing of articles and webpages.

Seven Essentials When Promoting Your School with Twitter

  1. Use it to announce school-wide or individual celebrations, upcoming events, reminders
  2. Pictures and videos are huge. Increase your audience interaction with some eye candy to catch their attention.
  3. Create a school hashtag where followers can search for your latest updates and add their own updates
  4. Follow teachers (can make lists on Twitter) and other educators: retweet the great things happening in your school’s classrooms
  5. Put your Twitter handle everywhere — your letterhead, signage, email signature, website. Market your school’s BRAND
  6. Attach it to your Facebook page — double exposure by automating the reposting of tweets on your Facebook page. This will allow you to vary a larger net with your message.
  7. Embed your “latest tweets” widget on your website. Twitter had a fully customizable widget that can be embedded in most any website.
